At Tangled Roots, we believe that the therapeutic relationship is one of the most important parts of the healing process. Every therapist brings their own experiences, perspective, and style into the therapy room, and we believe it's important for you to get to know the people behind the titles and credentials.
Our Clinician Spotlight series gives you a closer look at the incredible therapists who make up the Tangled Roots team. Through these conversations, you'll learn what inspires their work, how they approach therapy, and what matters most to them as clinicians.
This week, we're introducing Norman Berry
Meet Norman
What inspired you to become a therapist?
I’ve always felt called to help others and find joy in seeing people grow, overcome challenges, and thrive. As a therapist, I strive to create a space where people feel heard, supported, and understood while helping them recognize their strengths, build confidence, and realize their potential. For me, therapy is about making meaningful connections and reminding people that positive change is possible.
What populations or concerns are you most passionate about working with?
I am passionate about working with individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life. Everyone has a unique story, and I believe every person deserves a safe, supportive space where they can express themselves without fear of judgment. I especially enjoy helping individuals navigate challenges related to anxiety, emotional regulation, self-esteem, relationships, behavioral concerns, stress, and life transitions. I also enjoy working with children, adolescents, and young adults as they discover who they are, develop healthy coping skills, and learn how to navigate the world around them. These years can come with so many changes, questions, and emotions, and having someone in their corner can make a meaningful difference. Ultimately, my passion is meeting people where they are, understanding their individual needs, and helping them move toward a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling life.
How would you describe your therapeutic style in three words?
Supportive, Compassionate, and Empowering
What do you hope clients experience when they walk into your office or log into a telehealth session?
I hope clients immediately feel welcomed, comfortable, and reassured that they are in a space where they can be themselves. I want them to feel that they can show up exactly as they are, whether they are having a great day, feeling overwhelmed, or simply unsure of what they are feeling. There is no expectation to have all the answers or to put on a happy face. I want my clients to know that their feelings matter, their voices deserve to be heard, and they will be met with compassion and understanding. I also hope they experience a sense of encouragement and positivity, knowing that therapy can be a place to learn, grow, laugh, reflect, and work through difficult moments. Most importantly, I want every client to leave feeling heard, supported, and a little more hopeful about the journey ahead.
What is one thing you wish everyone knew about therapy?
I wish everyone knew that you do not have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy! Therapy is not just for moments when life feels unbearable. It can also be a place to better understand yourself, strengthen your relationships, build confidence, manage everyday stress, and prepare for life's challenges. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out, and you certainly do not need to have the perfect words to explain how you feel. Sometimes, you just know that something feels off, and that is enough to start the conversation. I also wish more people understood that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Everyone deserves support, and therapy can be a valuable step toward becoming the healthiest, happiest version of yourself.
What does healing mean to you?
To me, healing means learning to understand yourself, giving yourself grace, and recognizing that growth does not happen overnight. It is about making peace with the things you have experienced, learning healthier ways to navigate difficult emotions, and developing the confidence to move forward. Healing does not mean that you will never experience sadness, anger, anxiety, or disappointment again. It means learning how to work through those feelings without allowing them to define you or control your life. Sometimes healing looks like setting boundaries, speaking up for yourself, rebuilding confidence, or simply getting out of bed on a difficult day and trying again. Other times, it means celebrating the small victories that may seem insignificant to others but mean everything to you. I believe healing is a personal journey, and there is no specific timeline or finish line. Every step forward matters, and progress deserves to be celebrated!
What has being a therapist taught you about people?
Being a therapist has taught me that everyone has a unique journey, and growth looks different for each person. It’s important to approach others with compassion, patience, and an open mind while celebrating progress rather than expecting perfection. Most importantly, I’ve learned that people are capable of growth and change, and sometimes having someone believe in you can make all the difference. Even life’s challenges can become opportunities for positive change.
What do you hope every client leaves with after working with you?
I hope every client leaves with a stronger understanding of themselves, greater confidence in their abilities, and practical tools they can use to navigate life's ups and downs. I want them to recognize their strengths, feel more comfortable expressing their emotions, and understand that they have the ability to make choices that support their well-being. I also hope they develop a kinder relationship with themselves, learning to replace harsh self-criticism with self-compassion and recognizing that mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow. Beyond the skills and strategies we work on together, I hope clients leave knowing that their voice matters, their experiences are valid, and they are worthy of support and happiness. My goal is not to have all the answers for them, but to help them discover their own strengths, build confidence in their decisions, and feel empowered to navigate life with greater independence and resilience.
Outside of being a therapist, who are you?
Outside of being a therapist, I am someone who loves to have fun, enjoy life, and make the most of the little moments! I am originally from Belize, and I love the warmth, energy, and joy that come from connecting with people and enjoying life's experiences. I am a big sports fan, and I enjoy roller skating, ice skating, dancing, and singing. You might also find me watching a good movie, relaxing at the beach, or spending time in the kitchen cooking while jamming to my favorite music. Music and movement are two of my favorite ways to unwind and recharge. I love finding joy in everyday activities, trying new things, and making memories along the way. I believe that life is about finding balance, embracing who you are, and making room for the things that bring you happiness. And yes, there is a good chance you will catch me singing along to my favorite song while cooking!
Is there anything else you'd like future clients to know?
I want future clients to know that you do not have to have everything figured out before you begin therapy. We can figure it out together! You do not need to know exactly what to say, where to start, or how to solve every challenge you are facing. That is part of the journey we can work through together. My goal is to provide a welcoming, supportive, and judgment-free environment where you can feel comfortable exploring your thoughts, expressing your emotions, and working toward the changes that matter most to you. There may be days when progress feels easy and other days when things feel a little more challenging, and that is okay. You are allowed to take your time, ask questions, make mistakes, and start again. You do not have to navigate everything on your own. I would love to be part of your journey as you discover your strengths, build confidence, and create a life that feels healthier and more fulfilling. Taking the first step can feel intimidating, but you deserve the opportunity to invest in yourself. Let's take that step together!
